Deleting rest of image after clipping mask?

Let's say you have a 3'x3' photo and need to crop an area about 6" x 6". So, you do a clipping mask to remove the part you don't need, right? But that doesn't actually delete the part you don't need; the rest of the image is still there. The extra part of the image that I don't need is making the file size extremely large. Is there a way to delete what I don't need?
Thanks!

If its vector you can use the pathfinder divide tool and delete what you don't need outside of your 6x6 box. If its a raster image, bring it into photoshop.
