Engraving help

We do a small amount of flat plate engraving mostly on Rowmark material. The person who normally ran the engraver is gone so I've been fiddling with it a bit.
I've noticed that, on small text the letters seem to be "bolder" once they've been engraved vs how they look on screen. Most of the settings are set to defaults because we use the same bit and material thickness for the few nameplates we engrave. So is there a setting I can adjust that will remedy this? Do I need a better or smaller bit?

I set the fills with no contour and the pitch is at 0.25. The program we use is Dr.Engrave and the machine is a Roland.
Here are some pics. The first one is just a printout of the text for reference and the other is the engraved plate. Notice the letters are much thicker.
Also- it's hard to see but one the top-left of each letter there is a small raised bump.

yeah you can always go up in size, never down. Also it looks a bit deep to me, you only need to go around 5 thou deep for most plastics
