Epson SureColor R5070 Banding/Heat Issues

Hello All,

This is Tanner with Paint the Town Graphics. We have been running an Epson SureColor R5070 for just over a year. We had a computer fail and replaced, resulting in losing our Onyx settings and system preferences.

Our banding issues are exclusively on Avery Dennison 1105EZ/RS. We run 3M 40C all the time without issue, so we're thinking it's the Avery Profile and heat settings. Whenever we run a large field of solid color on Avery, horizontal and vertical defects are prevalent.

The first image below shows issues with both horizontal banding and vertical defects. The issues are much more noticeable in person. With the orientation of the photo, the vertical defect runs left to right, and is slightly lighter and desaturated in between the yellow shapes. the horizontal banding is more visible on the left side of the printer as it comes out.

Here is another section of a different print that had a solid color

We have tried multiple heat settings, as recommended by Grimco. We also ran a print head alignment, cleaned all areas that needed maintenance, checked humidity range, and tried numerous other tests. We run all our prints at 600/14pass. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Update: The default heat settings on the Avery Dennison 1105EZRS Onyx profile appears to have been the issue. We used heat values (in Celcius) from our materials that didn't have issues - 3M IJ3695 and 3M40C.

Default settings: 55, 40, 95
Grimco recommended settings during troubleshooting: 45, 40, 95
Values that dramatically reduced banding: 39, 37, 90

These values are significantly lower, so we will be conducting tests to see if the resin ink has any curing issues.

Any update on this? I'm having similar issues, but not banding. I'm getting the grainy spots in some places, and only with deep blues. figuring its a curring issue.

The 5070 was working well for vehicle wraps until we had a tec come out to do some work on it. Once he finished, we cannot get any prints to come out without severe banding. It has been a struggle to get the Epson technician out again, and the printer has been down for about a month. We finally have a tec coming out Monday, and hopefully we will get to the bottom of the issue.

Why do you run everything on 14 pass? I run everything at 9, and was told most do 6.... I've tried 14 once or twice and didn't see any noticeable difference than 9.

Hopefully the tech fixes your issue! They're great machines.

We have a R5070 and do 9 pass bidirectional typically - on most colors it’s good but anything dark and there’s some noticeable banding. If we switch to 9 pass unidirectional it gets better but obviously doubles print time. I’ve noticed even minor banding when doing 9pass unidirectional - especially noticeable in dark blues.

We’re waiting for some free time to test 14 pass bidirectional so when we print dark colors they have no banding and it’s quicker than 9pass unidirectional - that’s the goal anyway.
