FC9000 + Take up reel review

No take-up documentation says anything about the load setting Roll-1, Roll-2 or sheet. Does that matter. I use Roll-2.

We use roll 1. Looking up the difference it looks like roll 2 is "start at current position" so maybe that would affect the take up?
I'd try with roll 1, maybe you just figured out the issue.

Roll 1 (Front Edge) is for new rolls, finding the push rollers and then retracting to find the media's leading edge to minimize waste, while Roll 2 (Current Position) is for resuming cuts on a partially used roll or when starting mid-way, keeping the cutter at its present location without going back to the start or scanning the front edge, useful for segmenting jobs. Think of Roll 1 as "set the start for a fresh roll," and Roll 2 as "continue from where I left off".

Found the answer. Crosscut ON will prevent the take-up reel working with continuous cutting reading the barcode. With Crosscut turned off the take-up will move between reading barcodes. Doesn't matter if Roll-1 or Roll-2 is selected or Push Roller Sensor is on or off. The reason the crosscut didn't activate was that the push roller sensor was off. So when testing the after turning on the push roller sensor it tried to do a crosscut. So I turned crosscut off and then tested again and found that the take-up reel would NOW move between reading barcodes.

Amazing that there is NO documentation anywhere about this. Hopefully others that have struggled with take-up reel issues find this.

I was mistaken about the firmware. I had 2.01 so I went and updated to 2.02 then ran the continuous cutting with barcode test again to check up take-up roll behavior. Now the take-up didn't move between barcodes. So checked the crosscut setting and lo and behold the firmware update turned the crosscut back to on. Turned it off and the take-up now works again.

Glad you got it figured out.

And yes, it's crazy that a machine with thousands of options only ships with a digital manual, that never gets updated with firmware changes, when they always change the way the machine functions.

And that something as simple as crosscut would stop it from working... I get it, can't crosscut and take up at the same time.... But why not throw an error / reminder saying both options are on?

Ah well, now that you have it working you'll see how amazing take up is - I'd never buy a machine without it again! Though my next machine is going to be a summa ... Too many glitches and annoyances with the graphtec.

If Graphtec support contacts me I will read them the riot act. No excuse for not documenting that anywhere.

Just to let you know the Crosscut ON issue will be referenced in Caldera's documentation, as I had a discussion with a Caldera tech on another issue and brought this Graphtec setting up with them.

Oh, one thing I forgot.

If you're used to a graphtec, you'll want to punch whoever engineered this one....

As you're aware there is a fast button on the graphtec so you can move the head fast... well, that button is now the slow button on the FC9000, with fast being on by default. My muscle memory causes me to constantly press it to go faster, only to make it go at a crawling speed.... Then when I go to use my FC8000... I press it to go slow since I've been running the 9000 all day... and it goes fast. I don't know why they'd reverse the button to make it fast instead of slow... but it's a complete mindfuck  I do like the fast by default, less wear and tear on their cheap buttons that always seem to break... I just wish I wasn't used to it being the other way, and that I didnt have two different machines to use to constantly confuse me!
You are going to love me for this...
Go to settings menu/advanced then scroll to posi-keyspeed + slow key.
Set that to like 11
Then go to posi-keyspeed, set that to like 1 or 2.
And there you have it, the speeds are switched back to normal.
Merry Christmas!

More like all his coworkers are going to hate you for this, assuming ik's not the only one running the 9000 at work.

Just more stuff they don't tell you. Took me about 2 days to figure that one out after I got the FC9000.
