My understanding of face unlocking is that is uses depth and ir sensors. So I really don't see how this would work on devices that use it such as the Pixel 3A / 4, or iPhone.

It's very simple. You just put the mask on prior to setting up the face id!

Face ID is looking more at the eyes than nose/mouth. Try opening your phone while squinting...

A little off topic: I was just reading that while face masks should be worn by people infected
by a virus (like coronavirus), wearing face masks and latex gloves actually make you more likely
to contract a virus... something to do with the humidity helping viruses grow.
