How can I open a file in CS4 that was saved in a newer version of Adobe Illustrator

How can I open a file in CS4 that was saved in a newer version of Adobe Illustrator?

I was told once how to do this by maybe placing the newer file in or something?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That's what I thought I was told before, but when I place the file it comes in blank.

Just make sure there are no "live corners" in the files....."Sometimes" they do not save the same when saved as an older version.....

Try OBJECT > FLATTEN TRANSPARENCY

.AI in a newer version.

When I object/flatten transparency it just turns to a blank screen

Open it in something like Adobe Acrobat, re-save as a PDF, then open in Illustrator. I do it all the time, that should do the trick.
