How To Achieve This Look

Looking for a way to create a rounded look edge. I know how to do it with a circle by using a gradient but when you have something that is not round or straight what's the best way to go about it.
Here is a sample of a shield for reference.
There is also a reference picture. Not exactly like this but gives the idea.
looks as if the gradient runs and corresponds to the edge of the shape not in a way it normally does.?

Different gradients or gradient locations on each section of the shield. Each section is its own layer in photoshop. Each layer also has a bevel layer effect.

I should have been more specific. but meant in photoshop. but i am not concerned about the center of the shield. But the outer edge.
