illustrator CS4

when i place an image in illustrator CS4 by dragging it from the folder, i dont see the handles. & the file is its alway linked.

in illustrator 10 the handles are there & its not linked.

would someone explain where in change this setting?

pls see attach for explanation.

the placed files appear as masked items. CS4 doesn't display the contents of a mask (that i can tell). curious to see if anyone else knows.

It's funny you should have the same problem. I received a file yesterday from a customer with an embedded photo in CS4 that will not release either. Help!
