Illustrator Help

Hey guys i am working on a Racecar design. and i can't seem to do what i need in Illustrator. So hoping someone can tell me how to do it.

Attached is the pic of the item.
What i need to do is make the shadow (offset) red. But not Change the Checker Flag area. But it's connected together. I have been working on this for two days and it's driving me crazy

Separate it.

From the picture and your explanation, I really don't know what part your talking about or exactly what you're trying to do so I can't be more specific. There's probably 6 different ways to go about it but in the end basically what you need to do is somehow make them separate elements. Do some node editing of the original shape but work on a copy so you don't ruin the original.
