I'm In

I'm glad to be here first of all. I have only been in the biz for 2 yrs, as a result of purchasing a business from a friend. I jumped in with 2 months experience and the previous owner agreed to stay on for two weeks non-pay. I took over his accounts and studied the the book, "Mastering Layout", by Mike Stevens. I also appied myself to CasMate and then Flexi Pro 7. There were a lot of late nights between getting jobs done and trying to learn the program. Before this, over the past 6 or 7 yrs, I played around with Illustaror and Coreldraw.
In high school I took commercial art for three yrs. In my senior yr. my teacher recommended I look for work at a commercial sign company. Well I tried, but failed. Every where I appied... I got the same answer; "We're not hiring" "Got any experience" "We are looking for journeymen". That was 1974, Billings, Mt. After moving to Florida and being in the communications field for almost 22 yrs, as a sub-contractor. I lost interest and I was getting too old to be crawling in attics and working in the hot sun. That's when my friend offered me a proposal. Since I bought the business I haven't been happier. I think back on it now and wished I wouldn't have given up so easily on my search for the job I was looking for after high school. Yes, I must humbly admit, I am a rookie...... But I am making a good profit learning and doing what I love.

Left in 1996 to move up to Tennessee. Wasn't in the sign biz down there - I was a prepress specialist - in other words if you couldn't figure out how to get a job set-up to print or were having technical problems, you called me and I made it work. Also did work for Homes & Land Guide for many years, did some time at the Bradenton Herald. Last place I worked was Linotronic Service Bureau/Creative Typography in Palmetto, but they aren't in business anymore. Loved it down there - my family is still there, but there were just WAY too many people per square inch for us!
