jv33 voltage change??

Hello. I tried changing the printhead in a jv33-160 fw. 2.20 from solvent (green connector) to water-based taken from a epson R1900 (black connector). Whenever i do that (tried twice already), i burn 2 transistors on the mainboard.

Is there any voltage change needed in service mode to accept the water-based dx5? Or are there any other steps necessary?

Nothing that I'm aware of. I've done that exact thing on ours. Just swap the solvent resistant manifold from your old head, or get a new one first (if you don't the water based manifold will turn to mush and melt very quickly once the solvent ink hits it). Then install and plug the head in and go.

That being said - over the past year and half or so Epson has been doing some mods to their heads used in narrower machines specifically to prevent them from being ripped out and installed into wide format machines. This generally results in the printing having a gap every 15 inches or something. I've never heard of one burning something up on a mainboard before. While it is possible Epson made some other change that might do that it seems unlikely. I'm thinking one of your head cables is damaged. It sounds as though one of the "fingers" on the end of one of the cables maybe has come unlaminated and folded over onto another pin or something. That or maybe some ink (or flushing, head transport liquid) or something has dripped onto the circuit board on the top of the head or into the head cable connector shorting something out. That can fry something very quickly as well and is a known occurrence. Also - when you swap the head manifold to a solvent resistant one you must also be sure the solvent resistant gasket is also installed and in place. If that is out of place, wrong, or missing that would also allow ink to leak onto the top of the head.

Then maybe i have fried the printhead.
The connectors don't seem to be damaged. When i install the 47v, it doesn't work but the voltages seem ok. When i install the water-based 33v, the transistors fry. Change transistors and repeat.
I was thinking that maybe the numbers refer to voltages (as per aliexpress, they state the original is a 47 volt head and the other one is a 33 volt head)

If you have swapped 47v and 33v back and forth in v2.20 without any changes in service mode (apart from compensations for banding etc), then i'll try and look somewhere else for the problem, maybe check the printheads again on the r1900

It is actually IF33V and IH47V. Those have 2 letters in front of them - they are just sub-model numbers. IH47V will gave the green connector and is an OEM Mimaki DX5 head, the IF33V is on most all other DX5 heads with the black connector. That has nothing to do with voltage. For what it's worth we have been using a head out of a R1900 in our JV33 for about 2 years now. Still this morning it has a 100% perfect test draw and works great (firmware of course is at 2.20). There is something else going on with yours.

Also - BEFORE you ever disconnect or connect the cables on the head, slider board, or mainboard the printer must be switched off, not just the green button, the actual switch on the side or unplug it and then let it sit for at least 15 minutes to be sure any charge built up in the various capacitors has totally dissipated. Failure to do this can allow current still held in some of the caps to fry something.
