Keeping my head up

I have noticed that when I leave the heads in the up position on my SP540-V that I don't have to clean ink from around the edges of the heads at all. They stay perfectly clean. However if the heads are in the down position I find lots of ink around the edges.
Does this suggest that the cap stations are possibly adjusted too high or low?

the ink around the heads is usually from the wipers. If they are staying clean when high, the wipers may not be hitting the heads when cleaning. they should be hitting the heads regardless of height, so the wipers could be bent over as they tend to.

I always replace the wipers at the first sign of cupping, but that does make sense. I should probably try to always put the heads down before shutting the machine off just to be sure the heads are getting cleaned well.
I got into the habit of leaving the heads up because I was less likely to get a head strike that way and I haven't noticed huge difference in print quality.
