Large Stripe

I have a customer who wants a 9” stripe on the cab of the tractor trailer to match the others. It’s a plain solid colour stripe that goes basically straight across except for the arch on the hood then goes straight across the door. My problem is that hood line is very prominent and I would have to follow it and make it the top of the 9” Stripe. What is the best solution for this? Thanks!

We'd probably make a template out of a large sheet of paper. Put it on the truck, draw out the curves of the hood. Get a straight on picture of the paper. Import it and trace it. Make it to size and cut. Most likely it'll be plenty accurate enough for a truck hood. If it needed to be more accurate it might take two or three more adjustments.

Lay out your lines using Knifeless Design Line Tape, install larger piece of vinyl over the area and tape. Then it's as simple as pulling the filament to cut the vinyl, pull off the excess vinyl and tape carrier, then resquegee the vinyl. Very easy to use when you've got to follow body lines without having to make templates.

Take a straight on picture of the side of the truck, measure the width of the door, import into your vector program, scale it and make the stripe. Get a second measurement of something and verify it matches then cut it. Id split it at the door jamb/hood leaving overlap on each end to trim it after. Cut it as 2 different stripes (door and hood) instead of 1 long one so the plotter doesn't skew it or waste a bunch of material. We do it all the time and they line up with no problem. Don't waste a bunch of time over complicating it.

x2 for knifeless, unless they want multiple trucks i'm not spending the time to template that when we can use knifeless.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will try the knifeless tape. It looks like it would work well for this application. All the trucks are different so I am sure I will use both suggestions. Wet or dry application?!

I always do it dry using an air egress vinyl such as 3M 180mC. I don't think the knifeless tape will work with wet application, but I could be wrong.
