Layering translucent

I don't do to many lighted panels. But I have 2 44" x 6' to do next week that need peeled and refaced with a Yellow base with just Red text.

My question is would it be necessary to cut the yellow? Or can I just cover the panel completely in the yellow and layer the red on top. Will the red loose vibrancy is my main concern? The vinyl is Oracal 8500 Trans.

Or should I do a cut out of the yellow where the red letting goes?

Yeah if layering i would cut out that area and then just place the second color for example inside that weeded out part. Depending on the design, You might be able to get away with a 1/16" or so white space around because exact registration may be hard and this wouldn't look as bad.

I do it the exact opposite, I overlap it by 1/8" or so. 2 reasons why, easier registration with room for error and all vinyl shrinks. That 1/8" will be 1/2" in time

Even the cast stuff strinks? I print mostly everything anymore.

We've always had good results using red over yellow, most especially if the red is more to the tomato end of the spectrum. The red does darken a bit at night, but that only helps contrast, and if this is not a corporate uber-fussy-about-color-matching kind of customer, it's perfectly acceptable and potentially keeps the labor cost down a bit.

Back when colored backgrounds were more commonly done with acrylic or painted, this was more common.

Also, if you use GOOD cast translucent like Gerber/3M 230 series, shrinking is nearly a non-issue.

Printed faces for the most part look like dog doo
Lighted faces is one of the things I really try to do in cut vinyl. There is something rewarding about piecing together a multi colored logo. And it can be a good brain teaser graphically.

I have a printed face i did about a year ago that looks amazing. You need to know how to print on backlit correctly. Most just print and leave it washed out looking. Not me. I do it right.
