The takeup on my 5500 is a little over 18" from where the paper comes off the platen to the top of the tube.
Looking from the edge, the eyes are positioned about 3-4 inches from the floor, and centered under the takeup tube.

Hey thanks for the info mine is 17 " i have room to go another inch though..and the sensor i can make it 3 or 4inches...ok questions
does your media come out in front of your roller then rolls it up?
when it rolls media it rolls it counter clock wise when watching from a end of it...or if standing in front of it it rolls it up by the top rolling towards you...is this the way yours does? thanks

yes...the printed paper comes out in front of the takeup tube, and then back up behind itself. I usually tried to catch the print as it got down to the takeup tube, and taped it to the tube. From there, it would start rolling itself up as the droop blocked the sensors.

Mine also has a tube about six inches above the takeup tube, that sticks out past the takeup about 3 or 4 inches. All it's there for is to hold the paper away from the takeup and the media that's being rolled up. Here's a link to a photo of how it looks, notice the black bar just above the takeup > > > http://www.cnph.cn/YX_UpFile/Small/200911/20091161338296.JPG

thanks alot finished mine did not need bracket for sensor it centered the tube roller when i butted it up to the foot of the stand and tie wrapped it...so this little hp take up works well with the sp540 just a set of brackets and it was good to go....does yours handle 20 ft of banner material far as the torque on motor? thanks

Neat idea if it works!!

i got to make a bracket for my media sensor.

Neat idea if it works!!

Did the media sensor come included with the take-up device for the same price?

Does the Take-up device have it's own power, plug, 110-120V?

Trying to follow you on this, the take-up device motor turns at ONE speed, and is controlled by a media SENSOR, right?

If correct, please explain how the take-up device will stop and NOT pull the media out of the printer? I understand that when the media loops down between the printer and the take-up device the motor will turn on, but what can cause the motor to turn off?

Thanks for any in site.

everything above is correct works like a factory one should, media hits sensor, rolls a couple inches and stops..then you have foward / backward buttons hold down and they work until you let go...very satisfied with my setup i adjusted (slid it on my horizontal stand brace and centered for the 54" media ) hooked it up and feed about 12 ft banner material it did great....after all it is a take up reel made for wide format printers...
the key is that sensor...i think you could make the hole setup easily but what the heck $195 was a steal.....
the media sensor acts as on /off switch for motor....yes own power cord 110....yes sensor came with along with year warranty...

It's always worked great, heavy material has never affected it that I can remember.
Pretty stout setup, with the gear drive.

Phototec, it only roll the media when it hits the sensor. Once the media isn't blocking the sensor it stops rolling up. So it doesn't roll up much at one time.

About the worst thing that could happen is the paper not drooping between the sensors,
keeping it from rolling up. Like a fan might blow the media out of place, or the media out of alignment with the takeup.
