Network set up for 2 computers to run 540v

Everything has to run through the RIP. The RIP drives the printer, no big deal just get the file off the network and print.

Was told 540v runs from static ip address/roland print server

I'll have 3 rips to choose from 2 flexipro 7.6v2 /7.7v1 or versaworks. The rips not the problem. The tech that set up the 540 said the IP addresses from the first (mac) computer and the 540's IP are linked. He said I have to change the IP on the PC to match, And lose internet service or go in and change the ip ad. on the 540 to match whichever computer i want to send from. I don't want to have to change IP 's every time i want to send from either unit.

That does not sound correct.. If all pc's (mac or pc) are on the same network they should all be able to print to each other.. (or send to rip) Give us a quick explain of setup.. How many computers .. is there a dedicated rip.. ect. and how you connect to the internet.. hi-speed or modem... do you have a router or are you using a pc for a router.. ect.

I know nothing about networking

As it's set up now just the mac is set up with roland print server and rip. The mac is my laptop. I just got the PC (Desktop) and called my set up tech to see how to add the PC in so i can print / rip from either unit . As it is now the PC is not configured yet. To make things more complicated, The 540 and the PC will be installed a mobil unit ( enclosed trailer ). So at this time
it's not connected to the internet .(I am working on this now. Trying to find an adapter or card reader for the desktop for use with Broadband wireless pc card) As you can probably tell ,I'm not very versed in the computer area. I know my software enough to get the jobs done but i am still on the leaning curve. That being said back to my problem. I don't know how to accomplish this task and the tech did not offer any solutions other than change the IP on the PC to match What i have now and lose internet capability and use it as the print server. The only drag about that is no access to updates , patches, etc. Any ideas I'll get what i need i just don't know what that is.:help:

Ok.. not so bad..

what it sounds like you need. is

1. For the new PC. - Wireless network card. I suggest the new PRE-N from belkin.. its got nice speed and range.

2. for your shop - Wireless network Router - Again Belkin PRE-N .

3. For the mac. - Wireless card if its not already there. for it I think mac wireless is call the AIR CARD .

Both computers can have static IP's if required...

The PRE-N Router connects to your hi-speed internet connection (dsl or cable)

The mac and PC connect wirelessly to it - They will both have internet access and both be on the same network so the mac can print to the RIP (PC) . Same IP Scheme. Remember to turn on the security for the wireless network you will now have - we don’t want your neighbors using your internet connection.. You also said this is a mobile setup.. while you are mobile you will be out of range of the router at the office so both mac and pc will no longer get an IP . The easy way to fix this is...

Get another router for the trailer.. set it up with a different name and turn it on when you are on location , the 2 computers will connect to that router and you are still working. Turn the mobile router off when back at the office so everything connects back to the shop router. All this will require a little setup on your part but not hard to do.

The harder way is to do it without an extra router .. bit that’s too much to type here.

Either way.. a wireless network should solve this problem. I have installed and configured many of them (including the Belkin Pre-N) and I offer my help if you decide to try it..

Good luck!

Have 2 routers already

Shop has a linksys already and i have a d link 4 port sitting next to me collecting dust. Remember network retard. Happy to buy a new router if i need one. question is now (This probably sounds dumb) 1. dose the router need to have hard line to work. 2. need to instal wireless card in desktop to connect to router? Laptop already has airport card. 3 Still need to get a card reader for verizon mobile broadband pc card to connect to internet ? Then set up desktop as primary IP connection to 540 . Or desktop connects to the router who connects to the 540 ? Then access router from laptop . even with a different IP address to run it. I think the tech said the 540 only runs from one static IP. Man I really confusing my self!! Maybe i should hire a network specialist.

Sorry this is all for trailer set up

So i know i need a wireless card for desk top. And a Router. When out on location the router dose not need to have internet conection? Just wireless. After that It's just a matter of configuration?

When on location the router does not need a network connection to work... It will supply ip's to any wireless or wired pc, they just wont surf. so you do not need an internet connection to connect them.

If you want to use the verizon wireless card to connect to the internet while out on the job site I would do it a little diffrent. But thats up to you. There is also a router that you could get that has a slot for the verizon card.. that would stay in the mobile trailer.. then when you turn it on its online and the other pc's connect to it ,

PM me if you want to go in to alot of detail .. you can do this without paying a network guy.. and you can use the cash to get the faster wireless...

Personally I think you will be better off with printing from one RIP VersaWorks, and not going back and forth. Just save your file to one location from all computers and bring into the one Computer (RIP) and print.

Why do you need to have internet access on the computers that print?

Sure, it's nice to have, but it complicates things for no reason.
What complications you might ask?
The internet is where viruses, spyware, unintended updates, hackers looking to steal files or run an illegal ftp come from.

Do you really want or need that on production computers you make a living with?

Either way, you should be able to share out the Roland from the Mac, which is your primary RIP if I understand correctly.

If you intend to make the PC the primary RIP for the printer in the trailer, then share that to the MAC computer, then wireless is the way to go, but remember that wireless is limited in range.

PC desktop will become primary rip

I want to set it up so the desktop PC is the primary rip. The PC will be off line from internet 99% of the time . I just don't want to lose internet capability in the event i need access i.e. roland tech said he can install firmware updates , patches, run diagnostic etc. without having to come to the unit . I would like to be able to print from either unit in case one goes down.

I agree the RIP does not need internet access all the time.

If you do not have wireless now the PRE-N belkin has great range. You can have the router in your shop and the trailer in the parking lot and still connect. if you are transfering lage files. you could also run a patch cable to the trailer for temp 1000 base speeds... when need be.. or just use a 1gig usb drive to transfer the files..

The router can be configured to turn internet access on or off of the rip quite easy. It sounds like dedicated IP's for the computers then if you need the rip to get access to the internet you can turn it on via the router . Oh. And what does the PC us for an OS? Windows XP Pro? 2003 Server?
