Outer Glow Question in Illy

In Illustrator-------Ok I know how to create the outer glow, but can the outer glow be colored with a custom spot color I create? I go to change it and it seems not to be the spot color. Am I missing a step?

Figure out the spot color you want to use in just a plain rectangle first. Then on the color pallet change the spot color to RGB (or CMYK) and use that value for the color in the outer glow. Transparency and other effects often give unusual results when used with spot colors but will generally work fine with an RGB or CMYK defined color.

Select artwork and go to
Appearance panel
click on outer glow
select preview
mode: color
click on color box
choose color
