Popping and clicking when cleaning - Is this the MS gone bad?

When cleaning I've noticed a loud clicking & whirring sound and also some popping. Something is definitely not right. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Sounds like the service station motor is failing in some way (probably is being prevented from actuating due to gummed ink)
