Poster Design for Japan

I received this link this morning and I have had to think about it for a while. I think the impact of this design, knowing the Japanese culture, really hit me in a different way. This poster, no matter how controversial, made me donate to this relief effort. Please let me know what all of you think.

My thought is that the message will be lost to a majority of the people seeing it. It looks like a poster designed by someone who was looking at it from a designers perspective instead of from the perspective of the general public (happens all too often in advertising)

Most people will see that as a red circle, not the "rising sun" and they'll see the cracks and dust as bad printing, not graphic elements.
