Profile management

My only experience with wide format has been 5 years with a UV flatbed. Since the inks lay down on top of the materials, any profile I use looks very much the same from banner vinyl to foamcore.
So now, I'm purchasing my first solvent printer and am lead to believe I should buy some equipment to calibrate medias or have someone do this for me (dealer).
I use Onyx, will their profiles be good enough or do I need the help of an experienced dealer or should I invest in the necessary equipment and learn myself.

Simply depends on how good you need your color to be. The vast majority of printers do not do their own profiling or have anyone do it for them.
