Question about Flexi

How do you make the yellow cut around the outline of the word "Graphic" so that the black can be all on one layer and you can see the outline of the word .... instead of cutting the yellow, then the putting the "graphic" with the black outline over the yellow? If you understand my question please help.

Sounds like you have a solid block of yellow and you want to "cut out" the areas that overlap? Is that correct?

make a contour cut around the word graphics then sperate it then select the outline around "graphics" and the yellow then goto effects cut out.

This is a GREAT!! sign craft article that explains the different tools that will help you. The tool I would use is called "Separate Overlap". It is located under > Effects | Combine | Separate Overlap.
