RIP Ted Turner

I wanted to make mention that Sign Man Ted Turner, a man I very much admired, has died. I admired Ted Turner because on a small scale, I'm a sign man, a journalist, an entrepreneur and a lover of Bison, who looked up in amazement at the greatest person in all of those worlds. Turner checked all of those boxes in a 100 foot tall font!

Probably best known as the founder of CNN, Turner made his bones as a sign man, building the sort of signs you see prominently on the highways of the United States. But Turner wasn't just a sign man, he was a visionary. When Lady Bird Johnson (President Lyndon's wife) got behind a Beautify America program, Turner feared roadsign signs might be legislated out of existence, despite First Amendment protections. What did Turner do to protect his business? He invented or at least popularized the Infomercial and incorporated it into the cable network channels he acquired.

Also, a great newsman and journalist, Turner founded CNN. If you are of a certain age, you may recall that CNN had the most amazing coverage of the first Gulf War, broadcasting from the rooftop of a hotel as Baghdad was bombed. How did CNN get this access and why wasn't the hotel bombed? The power of networking. Turner said that every year CNN held an event for journalists from around the world. He knew everyone!

Turner was a great yachtsman and skippered the yacht Courageous to win the 1977 America's Cup.

Finally, Turner was a Bison rancher and owner of Ted's Montana Grill, called "a for-profit effort to save the Buffalo" in Wikipedia. It's a darn tasty restaurant and I've dined there many times.

Rest in Peace Ted Turner. May your name be a blessing.
