Need Help Roland BN-20 "Setup Sheet" error

TryingToPrint

New Member
Hello Guys,

I have purchased a Roland BN-20 and am trying to use it. The issue is that it doesn't see the media that has been loaded. I have purchased and replaced BOTH of the paper sensors, and same issue. I have tried with the MEDIA CLAMP in the UP position (Where it is supposed to be) and in the DOWN position also.... no difference.

I believe that since the media/paper sensors have BOTH been changed, that the only other things that it can be are the cable or the port on the motherboard that the cable goes to.

Has anyone else had this issue? Are the cables something that goes bad in this printer; or is it more likely the "Motherboard"? A $820+ parto_O

Thanks
#BN-20, #BN20

Could be the cable for the cut carriage, as it sounds like it's not reading. When you lock down the media and the carriage moves to see the placement, does it stop over the pinch rollers or does it just keep going? Also, make sure the pinch rollers are in proper placement. Can you send photos of the error and show a photo of the front with the pinch rollers placement and media loaded. Just so we can be sure that it isn't an issue with improper loading, which it probably isn't, but it would be the easiest fix.

Hello Zoogee World,

Thank you for the quick Reply. I am NEW to this particular machine so I am NOT sure of the names of different parts. The carriage where the print head is located, correct?
here is the link for the video:

Try pulling the media out past the sensor. If you can see the sensor it does no think the media is loaded. Sensors should both be covered.

Sorry Zoogee World but the "Locked" position is UP. WHen it is down, then i can move the MEDIA CLAMPS position.
Understood, then that isn't a factor, it's been a long time since I last used a BN-20, didn't remember that it locked backwards compared to other Roland models.

Both sensors are covered and the media is out past the front sensor in the video. I have had it out farther on other attempts as I have been dealing with this issue for 6+ months now. I waited 6 months for the 2 x Paper sensors to be back in stock.

I re-watched the video, as mentioned above, it doesn't appear the media is out far enough, but if you've already tried it with the media out hanging down in front, then that rules that out. Looks like it was a used Printer? Has it ever worked since you bought it? Might be worth asking the previous owner if they were aware of any issues.

I have pulled it out past the front of the printer before.
The EXACT error message is "Set up the sheet."
Thank you guys for your help so far.

Previous owner scammed me... yes it is a used printer. This is why I am trying to fix it. Like a I have already said... there are only 3 parts that could be bad.
1 of either Paper sensors (Front and rear) But they are BOTH new.
the cable going from the motherboard to the sensors.
the port on the MOTHERBOARD that the cable connects to.

I previously asked if anyone has had issues with cables going bad or motherboards going bad and no one has replied to either of these questions. I appreciate all the help so far and really need to figure this out. I am a computer network engineer by trade... but I stopped doing that 10 years ago. Fixing printers is something i used to do in the LATE 90's/EARLY 2000's. I now own an Importation business and am trying to print signs and t-shirts also.

Thanks again everyone, please continue helping:thankyou:

Did you check the small main board fuses? the system will still boot up but will still get errors

I had the same issue buddy and it drove me crazy i put my BN20 into the attic with this issue it could be fuses? FFC Cables damaged, encoder strip dirty marked!

There are more sensors involved setting up media. BN-20 can be picky, with the media width. The position of the pinch rollers(the left one is movable only) is checked by a sensor on the carriage. The lever position is also checked by a sensor. Then there is the sheet sensor.
Start the service app and test the sensors and you will know what they read.

Hello Cornholio, I run the BN-20 utility program... but as said earlier... I CANNOT run ANYTHING! When I try to run *ANYTHING* I instantly get the "Set up the sheet" error.

Exactly, I could see the front sensor in the video or I would not have said anything. But if op has pulled it out a foot or so and gave it a try there you go.

Not talking about the op but there are a lot of bn 20s used on the market. Pinterest folks have grabbed on to them without knowing a blessed thing about computer graphics past captcha or silhouette and are dumping them because they are too hard to learn. Therefore you get a lot of close to new machines that have not been used enough even for ecosol set to keep it flowing. Just look at the recent influx of posts on this machine and see what most of the content of the post is. I bought mine strictly to do small run stuff with tons of text for a particular customer. Paid for itself in three months but man do I miss my old seiko, lol.
