Roland Media Holder nuts stripping....I've got a solution!

I know I can't be the only guy in the world that constantly strips either the nut or the bolt, or both to these cheesy media holders that are on all the new Roland printers...we are to the point now where we actually have a box of thumbscrews that we keep here at the shop in order to replace them as soon as they strip once every week and a half to two weeks.

SO, I got sick of replacing the little proprietary square nut and thumbscrews that hold the big plastic media holders tight to the bars on the back of the printer and had my machinist brainstorm a plug-and-play solution.

This is a drop-in replacement nut, machined from chromoly (much stronger than the Roland one), with TWICE the number of threads to assist in keeping the media holders tight and keep the screw from stripping. And then we paired it with a machine bolt that's far stronger than the stock one. So far, these have been an incredible improvement. They screw in nice and tight without stripping, they don't wiggle like before and we haven't stripped one yet.

I'm going to offer these as an inexpensive, drop-in replacement small kit soon with two chromoly machined nuts and two machine thumbscrews....who else needs them?

Note: This is just round 1 of our little test. We may pull the neck up even higher than have the new nut slide in and pinch the plastic of the bracket both inside where it slides in and on the outside to keep it even stronger, more threads and keep it from wiggling at all.

I would buy. Mine has been broken since 2009. I just use tape to hold it in place.

As a former tool & die maker, I fondly hate "built-in obsolescence". Most everything I build for my shop will be around for decades after I'm gone.

I'm a big fan of keeping things as clean and stock looking as possible, but robust and functional. I'm testing this first run now over the next couple weeks to see if it's something that I think will hold up. We change rolls out 10times a day, 7 days a week, so we give our nuts a lot of use

There's another more robust version we're also thinking about that involves putting a delhrin piece on the open end of the big plastic media holders so it holds to front side tight to the front bar to prevent it from twisting and stripping this bolt out. Delhrin would last forever, slide easily, and give it even more sturdy construction. We'll see if that's even necessary.

I'd go for a pair ... I've been using 3M Blue tape since about 4 months after i bought my VS540 (a couple of years ago).

I've been using this same set of nuts + new updated screw since July of last year...I crank it down HARD now every time because I've been TRYING to break these and still no issues. It's a direct replacement part tha simply slips right into the groove of the existing nut. I'm going to have my machinist produce these now...if you're interested, email me matt@motogfx.com -- they're now tried and trued.

I put these two things on each side of the railing + butterfly nut - it worked like a charm.
