At some point in time (10-15 years back) Roland got new heads.
Maybe the "new" mainboard doesn't recognise old heads.

That is interesting. I didn’t know of that. The heads I’m use to using, the head ranks would have some ….. (dots).

The used board I installed, when I check the head rank info, I don’t have the dot option and I’m seeing other characters like :%*+-

It’s the first time I’m seeing these options.

Would you say this main board will not work for me?

The head rank doesn't matter, you can leave the old settings on there and the heads will still print. I would unplug and reseat the ribbon cables, and make sure there are no bent pins or bad connections. This is what often leads to wrong head message rather than an actual problem with the head

I unplugged and reseated the trail cables and head cable and still getting the wrong head is installed message.

When you initially turn on the printer does it come up with the correct model name?
I’m not near the machine now but When I turn it on in regular mode, the Wrong Head is Installed message comes up immediately.

When I turn it on in service mode, I think the printer name comes up first then you can enter the material width setup and do the nozzle test print which comes out ok.

This is very strange.
