Roland XR640 ink detection problem

Hi all - I'm in Brisbane, Australia. I had a print business that was burnt to the ground, and underinsured. (another story!!)

I am trying to get it all going again, so I purchased a Roland XR 640 that was not running well (it was very cheap) - I got the thing running, but it then ran out of Magenta ink. I replaced it, but the machine is now telling me there is no ink in the machine.

The display alternates between "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8" and "C Y M K Lc Lm Lk and 8"- I can't get out of this menu in normal run mode.

I've checked all of the connections, and the continuity of the ribbon cables - they seem fine. I can get into service mode, but as soon as I try to "fill ink" or do anything else, the menu reverts to the same issue. Ink type is set to the correct setting. The cartridge sensors (the contacts) all look fine.

Does anyone have any ideas? I suspect the ink tank board at this point, although I have no definitive reason other than it's the first board down the line. Is there any way to test this?

I should add that I am so bloody broke that it's difficult to buy new parts. The machine was going to make enough money to be my family's saviour , so any information or clues would be gratefully received.

Thanks in anticipation - David Atkinson

Hi, if it is not detecting any of the carts then it is probably not the individual sensors. I would suspect the ink board as well, these can often fail due to splashes of ink on them, or just randomly.
I havent worked on an XR board but to test you would need to see if the board is getting a signal from the ink sensor, then if it is, if this signal is being passed on to the servo board down the ribbon cable.
It could be the servo board is failing as this isnt uncommon

If you're in the service mode, go to the sensor test menu and see what the cartridge sensors are telling you. Have you tried powering down and pulling all the cartridges, then power up and reinsert all the cartridges one by one? Are you using OEM inks or third party inks. At least for troubleshooting I would make sure that you have all Roland inks in there.

Good Luck

Hi Joe - Thanks for this reply - I did try the powering down trick, but it didn't work. I will go in and have a look at the cartridge sensors, but the fact that they are all reading empty is a telling feature of the problem. I much appreciate you taking the time to help.
