I have attached a pic of what I would call a core gripper or core holder. We have 3 Royal Sovereign Laminators and probably a dozen of the core holders shown in the pic. The red rubber piece in the pic is a wear part and I found a lot of discussion about where to source the replacement rubber (Grainger) now that RS is out of business. Taking the holder apart and replacing the rubber is very straightforward. So, my question is, what, if anything, goes in the nearly identical space next to it?? The two spaces look almost identical at first glance, but when you take the caps off, the space with the red rubber has room to insert the rubber, and a metal plate that you tighten to hold it in place. The adjacent space has a small notch in the black cap, but not nearly as large as the notch where the red rubber is. Also, the black caps have a hole that whatever goes there can insert into, but if you tried to insert rubber in there, you would pull it right out with nothing to hold it in place.
Depending on the brand of vinyl or laminate, the one rubber strip isn't enough to hold the roll firmly in place. I am guessing that indention is there for a reason, but oddly, of the dozen or so of these we have, not a single one has anything in this space. All of the laminators are probably 10 years old or more, but it seems strange that not a single one has anything in this area. It looks like a place that a rigid rod might go to add a little resistance if needed. That is the only thing I can think of that wouldn't pull out. Can anyone help with this mystery? Thanks in advance for your help!
