Selecting economical thermal transfer printer? Is that possible?

Looking to run smaller, low production polycarbonate in a thermal printer and curious what machines are out there used? I know about the Gerber but I know they are a little pricey too and figure others have machines out there?

I would prefer a machine 12" wide but can probably work with one as thin as 6" without issue.

Well, in doing some talking, it seems a solvent printer can probably do the job we need. There are some materials that have a coating to accept the inks.

However, in doing some searching for the right machine, I am wondering if I am on the right site? Just referring me to "a pro" is not helping. I can find things for it to do.

I keep looking at machines but either it is not stated or there are several wide format printers without a cutter? Several HP machines out there but no cutter = no buy for me.

I am curious what machines to look for? I am primarily looking at replacement parts availability/cost, aftermarket parts, inks, pumps, etc. Do the thermal machines have the same issues with sitting too long?

I am looking at a Summa right now but seems they like to discontinue parts for their machines which renders them worthless! Not a fan.... I also don't like the Gerber service plan ideas. We are mechanical/electrical people so usually troubleshoot and repair our own equipment.
