Set up direct connect on computer

Hello, I am trying to set up a direct connect to my computer using a USB to Ethernet adapter. I keep getting errors indicating an incorrect IP address but everything is set to auto and when I try to assign one manually I must be doing something wrong because it won't accept the settings I am trying to use. I am not a tech genius. I am doing this to see if it fixes my problem with my LEJ-640 hybrid stopping randomly mid print as has been advised on forum postings on this site. Any tips?
