Here in the PRC (People's Republic of California) we pay a city tax (based on gross), a county property tax on all of our FFE and supplies (about 1.06% each year), A State franchise fee ($800) and a bunch of annual permit and special district fees. That is before income tax to the US and before we have made one dime.

Here we have city, county (both based on gross) then we have property. After all at it's time for US to get their cut.
Thankfully, no state tax here and probably won't happen here, at least not in the short term. It's always a possibility, but there is a motion before the state government here to make sure that it doesn't happen. More then likely it will pass, but anything is possible.
