Temp Agency

Have any of you used day labors from temp agencies? I have an install out of town and I'm going to hire someone for the day to kind of do grunt work like unload my truck, unpack boxes, pickup trash and clean the work site and make help hold something while I install...pretty simple stuff I would imagine.

The construction site actually has some day laborers from the same temp agency that walk around and clean and are actually pretty cool and helpful people... I just don't want to use their guy to do all my work.

An y pitfalls or anything I should consider?

If it's a legit agency, they should give you all the information you need. Make sure to express clear goals and requirements for the temp, don't let them tell you how things are done. And a particular rule we have now is that they are in no way to make any contact with the customers unless asked to or approached by the customer themselves. We haven't used temps in awhile, but when we did, you'd get the occasional bad one. We had one try to approach the CEO of a large organization we did work for locally. With our uniform shirt on. Instead of working. He overheard something they were talking about and just had to put in his two cents. Thankfully someone from our group stopped him before he did. Later that week, we got a message from our contact there that the individual was no longer allowed on their premises. I guess someone else had seen it, and considered him a liability.

Depending on where you are going, probably go to the DART station at Parker and pick up a worker there.

Does come with some risks though. Just depends on how adventurous you are.

just be clear with the temp agency as to what kind of help you need and also what you expect from the person they are sending you. don't hire someone off the streets because if they get hurt or something bad happens to them while under your supervision you are going to be responsible for anything that could go wrong. if you go with temp agency whatever happens as long as in not death your hands and your company are completely clear of nay wrong doing

Everyone works great their first day, so as I see it, you wont go wrong with a temp service. It's all legit too, taxes and comp are covered. You can hit up the local Mexican store and get a decent worker too but if they get hurt you are SOL as ASD said. I have a friend that has done it that way, not my thing though.

The place that I was jokingly talking about (hence "adventurous" comment), is actually more for the construction or landscaping(or at least it was the last time I was in around that area) trade. Although, I'm sure they would be willing to do anything.

Going to Houston..

I called PeopleReady

I’ve used temps from a few different agencies in Houston. A few have been good fits, most needed close supervision and guidance. If you have the right expectations and some patience the temp should be fine.

Stop by for a cup of coffee if you’re around the galleria area.

I wont be far from there... I did some window perf wraps last year right across the street from the mall... their storefront was so close to the service road / freeway that I needed earplugs it was so loud.

Just an update...

The guy I got from the temp agency was great. Intelligent, good worker, really helped problem solve some issues we ran into...stayed till we got the job done (11 hours).

I was curious about why he was at the temp agency, but not to go into detail, his job situation (he had a good paying job) is leaving him with no work for a few months, so he didn't want to sit around doing nothing.

What shocked me was that they charged me $25/hr and only pay him $12. I gave him a cash bonus to make up for it...but dang their cut is big.

Brother in law does work thru a temp agency and this doesn't shock me in the slightest. Corporations would go through a temp agency to rotate out employees to where they wouldn't have to worry about full time employees and the benefits conferred to those that would normally qualify as full time etc.
