Text paths in AI & cutting master

I have a graphic I am cutting, and one of the lines is in a script. When I convert to paths, obviously the letters are separate, even though they look connected. Is there any way to connect these letters so that when I cut, I don't get separate letters. I am finding it difficult to weed, as the letters are thin. It seems that it would be a whole heck of a lot easier if the words were conencted.

Also, using cutting master, I seem to be having a hard time figuring out what to size my document at so that it matches the roll size.

You need to weld the script letters. In Illustrator, select the text and execute a Pathfinder > Merge command.

Ok, I am using illustrator 8 right now. Is this feature available?
