Tiny jaggies when doing ConTour cutting on a Roland SP-540V?

Has anyone ever experienced very tiny jaggies when doing ConTour cutting on a Roland SP-540V?


My printer has always cut very nice SMOOTH ConTour cuts, just like my Graphtec cutter, however recently I noticed the cut are NOT smooth looks like very small jagged (almost lie a saw tooth), I checked the vector cut line and it is nice and clean with no extra nodes. Also changed the blade thinking that may have been the problem, but I get the same results from the new blade.


Anyone have any ideas as to what can cause this and or a FIX?

Your blade holder may be wearing out and/or the cut protection strip is slightly grooved which will cause the blade to bounce around slightly. Take the blade out and look for any vinyl pieces that may have gotten stuck between the blade and the holder as well.

As mentioned I installed a new blade there is NO vinyl pieces that have gotten stuck between the blade and the holder, also the cutting strip looks pristine NO grooves.

Ok, I noticed as it's contour cutting it sounds funny like it's making LONG steps, you can hear tat, tat. tat, tat instead of the normal SMOOTH cutting.

On my Graphtec cutter you can set the STEP SIZE from 254 to 2540, could the STEP SIZE be off?

Is there any way to adjust the cutting STEP SIZE on a Roland SP-540V printer/cutter?

I didn't change anything on purpose, however I remember I was making a adjustment to the feed calibration, maybe I was in the wrong menu mode and accidentally changed the STEP SIZE?

Could be, but it's NOT doing a perf cut maybe just small connected dashes?

The blade holder is tight (no wiggles), however I now this the cutter is making small steps instead of one long smooth continuous stroke.

So, the question is: Where and how do I change that setting for the printer/cutter?

Sounds like it's doing a tangential cut, but I don't know where/how that is set up...been a minute since I used VW.

My shot in the dark is cutting while heat is applied or the blade extension is too short causing grazing.. or the blade is unable to turn properly causing the grazing.

You said you changed the blade, but when the other guy mentioned the blade holder may be wearing out, I think what he was talking about is the bearings in it. To test that, pull the blade holder out and spin the blade on your finger tip and see if it swivels smoothly.

My other thought is the curve resolution may have been changed and its trying to do longer straight lines that you're used to. Hope you get it figured out.

I agree with VanderJ, your blade holder may be seizing a little. Doesn't take much to affect cutting accuracy. If you have a spare holder, just give it a try. Also, if you have a plotter pen, see if it does the same thing on some blank vinyl.

As suggested, the bearings in the blade holder.....also what cut speed are you cutting at? might be so slow on gummy vinyl that it's skipping? Far chance, but try kicking the cut speed up. Try also cutting without heat? Might be super gummy vinyl that's just too soft when cutting with heaters on

Just wanted to report back and let everyone know it was the blade holder, I installed a new blade holder with the old blade and its cutting great, just like it use to. So if you ever have the Jaggies when contour cutting, check your blade holder.
