Tram Banners/Scrolls

Hi All, I'm wondering if anybody knows what font/s were originally used for destination banners on trams and buses. A Google search these days mainly shows modern canvas prints and it's hard to know which have been done correctly. Any help appreciated.

I've made a few, printed and cut vinyl, always just used ariel black. Since, I've never seen one in real life, I have no reference point. But the ariel black seems to work.
