Using application fluid when layering on static cling vinyl

I've done it and it works but not just print on the cling?

That's what I was going to ask (why not just print on the static cling). I am actually working on my first Static Cling job and was planning on just printing on it. Never really thought of putting vinyl on top of it. Hmmm.
Why not print on cling
I'm placing a red colored vinyl on white cling material. The red colored vinyl will be still good when red print ink will have long since faded. My experience with red is that it is more prone to fading than almost any other color regardless of the type of printing technology.
