Whats the difference between TTF and OTF?

I had someone ask me today what the difference is between the two. I had never really thought about it. Most fonts I use are TTF but I do have some OTF in my computers.

I thought I was told that TTF was better for vinyl but that was a while ago and I dont think I was ever told why.

Hope someone can explain it to me so that I don't look like an idiot in front of a client again.

OTF has support for ligatures, etc, whereas with ttf you would need an expert font set to change to for those specialties
