Where can I get a font made or how can I do it myself

I work for Uncle Sam and oversee the building of expeditionary airfields. Those are the aluminum mat runways that pop up overnight and wreak havoc and then quietly disappear. Yes, I've been to Iraq a couple times.

We draw our sites in AutoCad and I'm responsible for lighting and marking. It's really just straight lines and small circles to depict lights. Easy money.

On some of our larger runways we add runway designators. The two big numbers you see on runways from the air that indicate the compass heading.

We are supposed to paint them as per a drawing in a technical manual. On a recent autocad drawing I did it took me 15 minutes to make a 2 and an 8 exactly to scale. The last one I did I just picked any ol' font and made a 0 and a 3, then stuck a note out that said it wasn't to scale and was done In Accordance with, blah, blah, blah.

I need 0-9 and an R and an L........That's it.

I can make the letters to scale in cad or corel or adobe or anything but don't know how to turn them into fonts.

I don't want to pay a bunch either. Years ago I worked on aircraft and I bought a font called Long Beach USN which was the spitting image of Naval Modified Vertical Block Lettering. In short it was worth a couple bucks to me. The place I got the fonts from has air force stuff and Carrier Runway Designators but station stuff is different.

Anybody want to contribute to Uncle Sam? Patriots?

That was the place I was referring to

in my post where I got the Navy, Air Force and Carrier fonts.

Runway Designator Station markings are slightly different from their Carrier marks.

Can I assume your a private contractor working for Uncle Sam making that EASY MONEY?

If I had what you needed, I would have given it to you, (no matter how much of that easy money you make), until you played the Patriot card.

I proudly consider myself a Patriot, and would do anything to help my Country, but helping you (a citizen) make "easy money", does not make me any more or less of a Patriot.

Skyhigh....

By "Easy Money" I meant it was easy to do. Nothing more.....nothing less.

I'm a GS Worker not a contractor and all I'm trying to do is save time on my CAD drawings with an accurate font. I directly support the US Marine Expeditionary Forces and by directly I mean, I go where they go.

Sorry if my phraseology created some confusion.

John if you have the individual characters in AI or EPS format and don't particularly care about spacing and kerning, I can assemble them into a font for you using Macromedia Fontographer.

I will apologize as soon as I remove my foot from my mouth.... its hard to type this way.
I would offer to help, but I see Fred is assisting you, and he's better equipped to help than myself.
I only hope you can appreciate my defenseness and pride in being a patriot.

Fred....Thanks.....

I'm taking a business trip out to our Headquarters in Lakehurst New Jersey followed by a trip to MCAS Beaufort South Carolina. I have the manual on my computer and Illustrator CS2 on my Mac. I'll see if I can make them while I'm flying the friendly skies.

Thanks.......John

ahhhhhhh that took some doing, but I finally got that foot removed. I wish I wasn't wearing my work boots.
Please accept my appologies.

Skyhigh......No worries......

Believe me our ideals and beliefs are identical. I wouldn't supply a free product to a guy who I thought was gonna make money off of Uncle Sam with it either.

I assume full responsibility for the way I worded that.

As for being a Patriot.....I cut myself the other day and it bled red, white, and blue.

Six years US Navy active......15 years Civil Service, most of it as a deployable civilian tech rep. I've seen more action as a civilian than when I was active. I've been to Iraq twice this year already. I do aircraft visual landing aids for the Marine Corps. When they break, I move. Little to no warning. Aid breaks in Iraq, I'm on a plane a day or two later all the while answering the phone from people wondering why I'm not there yet.

It's my greatest honor and priviledge to serve this country, high or low, Republican or Democrat........It's an honor to serve this country.

Skyhigh......

Actually we do have a couple potential openings.

One is for Electronics (GS-1670) Equipment Specialist
and the other is the same only it is a Mechanical job with a specialty in aircraft emergency arresting gear.

We slap down portable airfields with arresting gear or VTOL pads for helos, mark 'em and get out and leave them with the Marines. Actually the Marines build them. We certify them. The guys that fly the planes in need to know that it meets criteria. Pieces of aluminum improperly installed tend to fly all over the place. You can imagine the repurcussions of that and it's happened before.
