XG-640 Ink set choice

scox

....*....
We are replacing one of our old XR-640s with a new XG-640 and I'm trying to decide what Ink set we are going with. Our XR has C M Y K Lk Lc Lm.
We do volume stickers on these and I'd like the extra speed from a dual CMYK set up but I'm worried it's going to result in us not being able to hit colors we once did missing the mid tones.
Also like the wide gamut the C M Y K Lk Or Gr Rd offers up but have heard Orange is the new White as far as frustrating inks go.

Anyone have experience in the field with either of these set ups? Pros, Cons Etc?

Thanks!

The light colors in your current setup aren't really helping you hit those mid tones per se. They make mid tones look smoother. So if you switch to CMYKx2, you should be able to hit the same colors but they might look a little more grainy. Send them one of your jobs and have them print samples for you so you can compare. My bet it the difference is so slight you'll be happy to use the CMYx2 setup.

The CMYKLKOrGrRd setup is great for hitting colors and better gamut. The main gripe about orange is that it fades quicker than the other colors. I don't know about Roland inks but Mimaki orange does require recirculation through a filter like white does. So there might be some truth to it being problematic. I haven't personally run into any issues on the Mimaki end of things though.

I like CMYKLcLmOrGr inkset.
yes, dual CMYK most likely will be a bit grainy, although I have not inked one up this way. I am basing this on previous models that have different heads, so not 100% sure.

I have CMYKOrLcLmLk on my old VG-540 but changed to CMMYKOrGrLk on my VG-640 to get Green and keep Orange and Light Black...I have not noticed the lack of Lc and Lm at all...
The orange capping station on my VG540 clogged once and had to be soaked in fluid but has no recirc pump or any other issues with orange after that or on the 640...
Ran into a problem with old blue ink clogging a head not too long ago...we werent paying enough attention to which ink box was newest and ended up with some old blue ink from 2023 clogging a head...
