I wouldn't necessary call this "evil". I'm honestly not surprised that this has come about in some form or fashion.

There is actually one situation that how Adobe handled it, that I consider far worse for the consumer then this.

While one may argue that the limitation may be "more conservative" then others, almost all services have a limitation of some sort like this for their services.
