What was the unknown extension? For the ones that you can't see the extension, Open up "My Computer" and from the top menu click on tools/Folder Options. Then click on the View tab, scroll down to "Hide extentions for known filetypes." and make sure it's not checked. See if that helps......

I found Bitstream very dangerous. What happens if you accedently select all the installed fonts and drag them out of the list. All the system fonts get uninstalled. "All I'm gettin' is a bunch of boxes" ouch. If you own Bitstream, you may want to backup your windows font folder.

I think you are just converting to a shape or adding a mask to the text. Try right clicking on the text layer and click on rasterize type. then use the wand to select. Normally I make a duplicate of the text layer before rasterizing, in case a change needs to be made later.
