  1. Some of our fellow sign makers just make ya shake your head

I don't know. I see so much cut-rate, unprofessional $#!+ being pumped out by our industry that I'm afraid we are gladly giving the regulators the very knife they use to cut our throats. I've griped about this before, and feel it is falling on 100% deaf ears. It seems no one in this industry...
  2. FONT ID (not eurostile)

The top, more squared example does indeed look like Eurostile. However, it looks like someone oddly chose to grab the Eurostile Extended Bold weight and then squeeze it to roughly the same horizontal proportions as regular Eurostile Bold. The same thing is possible with the Microgramma knock-off...
  3. Need Help Saturation...Flexi vs Illustrator

The size limitations aren't quite as much an issue anymore. The Illustrator 24.2 (CC 2020) June update added the large canvas mode, which expands the maximum artboard size up to 2275" X 2275". The AI 24.3 August update added some new typographic features that make sign design much easier in...
  4. More aluminum tariffs??

The original intention was to try to save steel mill jobs. The tariffs didn't even manage to do that. I doubt the tariffs have done that either. The materials cost hikes, declines in sales and tens of thousands of workers losing their jobs amounts to a pretty big negative hit to the tax base.
  5. Need Help Saturation...Flexi vs Illustrator

Dumb question, but could it be something as simple as CMYK values? Lots of people just use a 100% Black, which often outputs as a really dark gray. Under the Preferences menu in Adobe Illustrator there is a setting called "Appearance of Black," and the default settings are On Screen, Display...
  6. More aluminum tariffs??

The tariffs on steel and aluminum have not worked. If anything the tariffs have backfired. Steel mills in places like Michigan ended up laying off thousands of employees anyway. But other industries, such as the auto industry, have laid off far more workers.
  7. News R I P Eddie Van Halen

It was known Eddie Van Halen had been battling cancer on and off for years. Still, his passing comes as one hell of a shock. The year 2020 just keeps on getting better. I can't help but think of other guitarist legends who tragically left us far too soon. Jimi Hendrix. Randy Rhoades. Stevie Ray...
  8. Font Help Assessing my options

The two type examples pictured in the original post are not Century Old Style or CG Triumvirate. They're something else. CG Triumvirate is nothing more than a Helvetica clone. The sans example shown looks more like a German DIN typeface. The typeface used in "Anselm" looks like a cross between...
  9. Need help ID'ing Script

I can't seem to come up with a match for the script typeface used in the attached image. TIA for any help.
  10. Need Help WinPCSign Font Height

FYI, the Font Height Options feature in Adobe Illustrator was recently added just a few weeks ago with the ".3" update of Illustrator CC 2020. I wish the font height options thing was always visible, but it does seem to be "sticky" once it is made visible in a document pre-set. There are...
  11. Opening Branch in NYC

The regs in Texas are strict, but they don't sound nearly as onerous as those in NYC. Our company maintains a license to do business down in Texas since a good number of our clients have locations in both Oklahoma and Texas (as well as other adjacent states). I don't know all of the TDLR...
  12. Cut Vinyl vs Printed Vinyl...

Something cheap and temporary, like a Coroplast sign, should be printed most of the time. That really goes for when you have to fill a high quantity order. But there are always exceptions. Some client might insist on having metallic gold vinyl graphics or true fluorescent lettering. Give them...
  13. Cut Vinyl vs Printed Vinyl...

There are more issues than merely just cost difference when choosing between printing something versus using specific colors and types of cut vinyl.
  14. Suggestions Cloud Storage? Do you use it?

I personally only use cloud-based storage for frequently used files. Cloud storage is convenient, but it can get costly if you have to store terabytes worth of data there. And then you need a working Internet connection to access the data. Cloud services aren't bullet-proof either. I'm pretty...
  15. Cut Vinyl vs Printed Vinyl...

We do A LOT of printing (2 latex printers and a flatbed running constantly). But, with that being said, cut vinyl has multiple advantages. 2 mil high performance vinyls and premium translucent vinyls can last years longer than any digital print. That's both in terms of durability and resistance...
  16. Question Just want to understand EPS files

A customer provided art file can be pretty slippery due to odd ways and bad choices of how the artwork may have been created, exported or even round-tripped thru multiple applications before the file was sent to you in its present condition. Poor quality artwork is not too bad a hassle if all...
  17. Eeery Sky tonight

Yes, the milder weather is a big relief. Our last 100°+ day in Lawton was a balmy 108°. But at least it's not too cold. Up in Colorado a couple days after our smoky, haze-filled Labor Day fishing trip, we had snow in Colorado Springs. And it was still, technically Summer. At least the weather...
  18. New PC Specs i would need for Adobe Design Software

You're trying to sell the idea that a sign maker can get by without RIP software for small to medium size large format work. If you don't have a real RIP program what else do you have other than a basic print dialog box? I don't know of anything in between. Or am I just to supposed to hand-code...
  19. Eeery Sky tonight

The smoke haze is pretty bad up here. Air quality is in the hazardous zone for people with serious respiratory issues. The only good thing about it is the temperature dropped a few degrees. I was dealing with this stuff last week while on vacation in Colorado. My brother and I went fishing at...
  20. New PC Specs i would need for Adobe Design Software

Print and cut functions like those found in large format RIP programs are not something you can merely throw together in a macro to run in some basic print dialog box. It's a little more involved than that.
