  1. Corel X6 Freezing Up

There's a lot of vector-based stock art that is not well-tuned to work in CorelDRAW. This especially goes for complex illustrations in .AI, .EPS or PDF format. Really high node counts on objects is one thing (although various printers & RIPS are prone to reject objects containing more 5000...
  2. No longer offering Font finds

Kind of a strange thread. I'll admit getting annoyed by some font ID requests when the typeface in question is widely available and commonly used. People who design signs for a living or do other types of graphic design should have a decent level of typographic knowledge. Usually if see a ID...
  3. exporting cdr fail

Regarding the 200" page limit, are you guys sure that's really the limit? I've had PDFs fail and yield the blank page at smaller sizes, such as 150" X 96". I assumed PDF would have the same size limit as Illustrator .AI and InDesign .INDD files (227" X 227"). Obviously other factors have to be...
  4. Corel Draw Purchase

CorelDRAW X8 will run in earlier versions of Windows. I'm currently running the trial version in Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit edition. I'm trying to make up my mind on whether to just buy the download version or wait to get a physical disc version of it (which I prefer). Anyone currently using a...
  5. CS 5.5 Font question!!!!

Adobe has far more fonts available via Typekit than they have ever offered on any previous version of Illustrator, Photoshop, PageMaker, etc. or any Creative Suite package. Previous boxed software contained only fonts Adobe sold in their own type library. Typekit licenses typefaces from many...
  6. CS 5.5 Font question!!!!

There isn't anything like Font Folio or Typekit involved with CS5.5 or any other version of Creative Suite for that matter. The application installer will install some or all the fonts that come as bonus goodies with the applications. The fonts are available in a folder on one of the...
  7. Locky Virus problems!!!!

I'm thankful I've never had a computer hit with ransomware, but I do know others who have. It's just another reason to back up data regularly and save it in more than one place. Various "analog" problems can take your data too. Hard discs can fail without warning. A thief could break in your...
  8. Font or not?

It almost looks like an auto-tracing attempt to re-create something set in Bookmania. Of course the results are pretty terrible. The swash N and swatch P characters are definitely in the extended character set of Bookmania.
  9. FONT ID

The lettering looks a little customized, such as the lowercase "u". Bookmania has just about every imaginable swash in Bookman covered, even in the small caps character set. It really shows off the capabilities of Open Type. Bookmania can be synced via Adobe's Typekit service.
  10. Corel X8 is out!!!!!!!!!!!

Adobe, Aldus, Apple and a few other companies let it happen 25 years ago. The sign industry has never been dominated by the Mac platform. The earliest vinyl cutters and computerized routing tables used software that ran on MS-DOS and then Windows. Complicating the issue further, the Mac...
  11. Corel X8 is out!!!!!!!!!!!

There hasn't been any real mind-blowing new features in the past few version upgrades, but there has been a lot of subtle changes over the years that cumulatively would make an upgrade worthwhile if you're using an old version of CorelDRAW. CorelDRAW X6 is the first version to properly support...
  12. CorelDRAW - New Version Soon?

Well, I'm still planning to check out the CorelDRAW webinar tomorrow morning. But it looks like CorelDRAW X8 is now already available (download version; the boxed version ships on April 5). From what I can tell there's not a whole lot of new must-have creative tools in this release. A bunch of...
  13. Flatten Transparency Issue CS5

I'll second the round-tripping approach via Photoshop. The only alternative is doing a bunch of welding and cutting work within Illustrator (and then re-doing a lot of the fill work). That's a lot of work to do just to maintain the vector artwork. It's easier to just paste the Illustrator...
  14. Coreldraw Tutoring

It sounds more like you need to be using the Blend tool in CorelDRAW for this kind of thing. Create an oval shape. Then create a slightly S-shaped line for the lines in the rope pattern. Make two copies of that little s-shaped line segment. Create a blend between those two line segments. Attach...
  15. CorelDRAW - New Version Soon?

We're using X6 at my workplace and I have X7 on my computer at home. Both have featured worthwhile improvements, some things subtle but still worthwhile. CorelDRAW was very late to the game with supporting all the features of OpenType. I have a lot of different "pro" OTF fonts whose extra...
  16. CorelDRAW - New Version Soon?

I received an email from Corel about a webinar they're broadcasting Tuesday, March 15. The guy running the presentation is Gérard Métrailler, VP Products, Graphics & Productivity. The tagline in the email said: Join us for a FREE 1-hour webinar and discover unparalleled power and versatility...
  17. Cooper Hewitt Font File Gripe

A little add-on to my first post: my comment about the re-generated fonts working properly only applies in the basic character table sense. Some of the OpenType functions didn't carry over properly. I did a little additional research about this typeface. It turns out the OTF files are pretty...
  18. Cooper Hewitt Font File Gripe

The open source type family Cooper Hewitt has earned some praise from type critics. It's a clean and attractive alternative to some other sans serif typefaces that have been used to death. As good a design as it might be, I ran into an annoying technical problem with its font files this morning...
  19. How do I create open face (exposed neon) channel letters in CorelDraw?

I create my actual neon tube path designs for things like open face channel letters and other stuff within CorelDRAW. Creating a good single-stroke center line is critical. I typically work in full size, so I'll assign a pen stroke to the center line the same width as my desired neon tube width...
  20. Font ID Request - 50's Movie Title

A friend of mine asked me what typeface was used in the attached sample, a frame grab from the opening title of a b-movie from the late 1950's. The typeface looks familiar, but I just can't put my finger on what it is. The sample is too small and rough for the What The Font tool at MyFonts to do...
