They're essentially a huge ionizer that grabs just about everything out of the air.

Wow, thanks for this memory jogger. My dad had an old one like this in his shop during the 70s. He used to clean out his paint gun by spraying the excess paint or thinner on the door. It was truly a work of art by the time he scrapped it out.
