That commission idea is the only way to go in my opinion... web development is not something appropriate to stay in the middle on when the developer is a reputable professional... to get a commission for a referral is a great way to justify the less typical avenue of just handing over a client...
I know I've told this story a time or two.. but it's so great... here goes again...

sell a song to a wedding party to use once.. get paid for your hours... sell a song for a jingle in ad campaigns.. has value forever... commercial value... and...
I'd really like to see this thread discuss the business of negotiating the sale & closing the sale too... we all talk about designs every day here, but we ALL face some of the same other challenges too.. and i'd like to see various different ways we all deal with that..

Pat is right about it driving traffic to your website, so I think it's time you seriously proof read the site and fix the dozens or errors glaring out from every page.... just sayin'
