What kind of printer are you trying to print on? I know on my Roland it has an option to switch to a clear media or opaque media on the printer itself. I am not sure what that does but it's there.
Does anyone know?
I did this for a ticket booth - They wanted to be able to see thru them so I printed on mesh banner - Unfortunately to much light came through to the face of the mesh banner and you almost couldn't even tell it was there - It worked perfect when the sun wasn't shining right on it though -

There is not much setting up and training offered - they give you a link to a document to read then I think you get 1hr maybe 2 of a phone call of them showing you how to make a template and other things. Any other...

Make sure you are on correct firmware for the version of your graphic program -
Make sure on the plotter you have the correct size of reg marks set that you are using
NGlantz - BeMesh - Printed (2) 60" x 65' on it and turned out great - they got attached at a train-yard on a walkover type of bridge

Your worried about 4" of material? Charge it to the customer if it matters. I usually have almost 2' of wasted material when I print a single job and my customer pays for that
