  1. Question What Printer would you stake your business on?

My 'add' to this conversation would be that the key to consistent print quality on the HP is frequent, scheduled PH changes. Like any business person, I am naturally inclined to eke out as much life as I can out of the disposable printheads. But that's just a recipe for frustration as these...
  2. Output method for LARGE file

We do a lot of large scale wall projects and your file 900mbsize doesn't actually seem that large for a 1200 sq. ft. image at 89 dpi. Is it a placed images with mostly vector elements? Sounds like you've already done this, but we always add text and logo elements as vectors which increases...
  3. Union sign shops? Strikes?

Could be wrong, but I believe the answer is 'yes' because several construction contractors with employees I know are union so they can get government jobs.
  4. Union sign shops? Strikes?

No union shops here but many print-related shops in nearby St. Louis. Or I should say there were many as those seem to be the shops closing right and left. Growing up, my father was a shop steward with the Teamsters, and I can remember his rantings against 'the company' as if it were the...
  5. Discussion Print Heads

2CT I'm a little foggy this morning; would you clarify what the term 'Thermal' is, or is that just a general reference to the HP Latex print system? Similar to others, we typically get 4k-4500 with a rare max around 7K before quality degrades. Haven't had a head strike in recent memory...
  6. Window Perf Holes Clogging

2nd that. We too print 6 pass, heat around 200F (93c), always on product with paper liner, with great results. Agree that the ink probably set too high but ours at 90% and works fine. On the 560 at least, best to run about 2ft past print head to start. I've never seen a $100 roll unless...
  7. What is causing these scratches?

We leave platen covers in 100% of time for workflow. Once installed correctly, just pushing a little extra material past that velcro strip does the trick. Not doing so is asking for trouble.
  8. Material for full window decals installed inside facing out?

Maybe not such a dumb question after all considering he got six different ways of doing it? I'll add a seventh; panovision perf which tapes from inside.
  9. HP 560 Update won't download

Hmm - .8 not listed on HP website, only .7 and .13 Regardless, I'm turning off auto update and sticking with what works.
  10. HP 560 Update won't download

Not sure - my current installed version is STORM_00_07_00.7 which was installed Aug 18. Only version newer on HP website is version .13 apparently corrects a couple of power related errors according to HP website.
  11. HP 560 Update won't download

Same here. Not having issues and fine with current firmware, so maybe a good thing. Did you get a resolution?
  12. Print & Cut Longer than 8' issues

Have found that heat involved with latex curing (HP 25500, 560) can sometimes (rarely ) cause vertical distortion in middle. Apparently material heats, sags a tiny bit vertically, so reg marks are dead on at sides but cuts wanders too high towards middle. Solution, turn heat down if possible.
  13. Print gloss and matte at the same time?

Or you could sub to any number of label companies that does spot UV.
  14. How to get lower shipping rates? FedEx & UPS

We ship throughout US and use Pitney Bowes SendPro which is a great web-based program that costs $5/month and ties all your shipping into one app. Allows you to choose best rate among UPS/FedEx/USPS. They have their negotiated rates, or you can tie in your own account which we have for FedEx...
  15. telling customer product names

[ My architect client called and asked me what I would have used. Material, paste etc. They wanted the product name and distributor so they could let the other sign shop know. I had to tell them sorry...we don't give out that info to competitors. The nerve. Agree, but might add 'Like you, we...
  16. Equipaint

Always thought equippaint to be reasonable and a good contributor. Yes it was a rude, slightly inappropriate comment but banning him, really? How about a middle ground, sort of like we used to be expected to behave face-to-face before the internet allowed us to hide? Yes, naive I know, but...
  17. Discussion Perforated Window Vinyl - Best for flat panel windows?

Perf is one of our top volume products. We've experimented with a lot of product and currently favor Solvex 70/30 Latex from Fellers. Prints well, holds up to heat, and the thick paper liner provides stability under heat and easier handling on the jobsite. Like that it is available in 164'...
  18. Need Help Top Value Banner printing issues: snaking, spotting, streaking

We don't use Top Value but have had those same issues with several other brands on our 560. Key banner (matte) from Grimco was something we came to rely on but they dropped it in favor of an inferior house brand. Now using Arlon DPF 313 with good results on our 560.
  19. Am I being greedy??

Right - I was thinking VAT tax.
  20. Am I being greedy??

Thanks for the good example which illustrates how much 'gross margin is needed to keep a sustainable profit. I normally shoot for 45% GM or more , perhaps 30-35% on a rare deal that is strategically important and where I can achieve some type of economy of scale. I noticed you add margin to...
