Ideally you will want a second 'internal' hdd which you will need to setup as your scratch disk. How much memory do you have? how many hard drives?

I would double check the usb cable, even try it from a different port - how long is the cable?

I would think that you would have too many issues - you wouldnt want the signal to drop halfway through a big print - personally I would stay wired

For photos dont use relative colormetric - use perceptual, or you will most likely loose a lot of detail in the midtones. Also, I second what Flame and Mark said above
