  1. Business Models

A good portion of the book is devoted to idea generation via team input through a variety of interesting methods. Let us know how it worked for you. As for me, I'm just a "one man show" still trying to connect the dots of a business that has been five years in the making, yet lacking the...
  2. Business Models

Three copies? Let's see...one copy for the desk, one for the night stand, and another for the strategic planning / engineering department (restroom). JB
  3. Business Models

Well, it arrived today and if you thought the preview was cool....wait until you see the entire book. In a nutshell, it's a book that utilizes the art of "visual thinking" to work through abstract business concepts with lots of pictures. All I can say is wow! If you don't have a better...
  4. Spell Much?

I think it's secret code for "Czechs" cashed here...you know...as in human trafficking. I wonder if the feds are onto this? JB
  5. Business Models

I've been mulling over the purchase since early March and finally went ahead with it. I found a new paperback copy (white cover) on Ebay for just under $28.00 including postage. I had considered the more expensive lay-flat spiral bound edition (black cover), but Amazon was sold out. It was...
  6. Business Models

This is a book recommendation only...I have no affiliation with the authors / publisher, and I am in no way compensated for this plug. This is too good not to share, especially for those who have been in business just a short time or those of you thinking about making the jump into your own...
  7. A recycling idea

Cardboard Tubes After pitching out a bunch of these things, I've begun to build with them. The one pictured below holds useable pieces of pounce paper and vinyl. Every time I empty a roll, I get out the Elmer's and glue on a new one. When I get it finished, I'll give it a quick coat of...
  8. Basic question about illy

I don't know about VersaCamm, but SignLab seems to prefer .dxf files (exported from Illustrator). Jim
  9. Font for granite monument

Zeth, I'm with Fred. That's condensed modified roman with wedge serifs...and obviously hand cut. You should be able to to plotter cut and hand tweak the serifs with an x-acto knife. When blasting, those tight serifs can be a real pain to obtain any definition without over blasting the...
  10. Lemonade Stand Banner

I think your kind gesture will make their day. I always try to stop by lemonade stands and give an extra tip, just to encourage young entrepreneurs. With all the distractions vying for kids' attention these days (TV, computers, video games and such), it's fun to see youngsters with a "can...
  11. how to draw ovals

Go a few steps further further and quadruple your money...offer left and right hand versions. For an extra "artwork fee" you could also offer the more complex mirrored version. Reverse and flop work-ups should be able to garner an additional 10%. JB
  12. New flatbed digital- 110,000 sqft/hr

Is this an effort to take down the market, as we know it? 110,000SF/HR...was that a typo or just an attention getter? At ten cents a sf, that has the ability to produce eleven grand an hour. At a full 48 inches wide, a printer that fast would have to chuck out media at a rate of 458...
  13. water jet machine, will it leave a clean edge on glass

I've done a lot of waterjet cutting with aluminum and steel, and I think you need to contract out your work initially. With glass that thick, I think you may end up with "flow" or "sweep" marks on the glass due to turbulence whenever the jet passes over the support slats on the machine. These...
  14. Aaaaaaaaargh!!! Carved a sign wrong!! (I hate Flexi)

This got me to thinking and I've been tinkering with copy / paste in Illustrator and SignLab 8. Copying text from SL and pasting into to Illy results in perfect results automatically converted to (ungrouped) curves...absolutely no problems. Very handy, indeed. Copying text from Illy and...
  15. What software to use

Hey I heard that. Get this: I first inquired at a LOCAL hole in the wall computer store back when I was looking to purchase AI. The goofball OWNER behind the counter suggested a cracked copy torrent. What's the world coming to when a small businessman willingly screws himself out of bread...
  16. What software to use

You can always plug in a hub. I have my SignLab Dongle in a hub and it does just fine. You get what you pay for. Invest wisely and be rewarded handsomly. If you can't afford both rip and cut, scale back to cutting only until you can pay for rip software. JB
  17. Lease a Wrap Shop in South Florida

It's good you didn't have to go into debt...I trust you can make your money back. Glad to hear your primary business still puts food on the table. Jim
  18. Lease a Wrap Shop in South Florida

I don't mean to sound judgemental and this post is not intended to be scornful toward a guy (or gal) who tried to make a go of it on their own. At least you had the guts to try, and maybe something will work out in the future. As a relatively new business owner (5 years), I've made myself a...
  19. Customers doing it themselves.

I'm a member on another forum and lately I've been cautious about handing out too many technical tips due to the fact of local and regional competetors browsing the same forum. Most of the forum members post their entire equipment list in their signature at the bottom of each post...nothing...
  20. illustrator color

Thank you...I had that problem a couple of weeks ago and didn't know how to fix it. This place is great! Jim
