  1. JV3 w/ JVS inks making profile with flexi & profile maker

Start by abandoning 360x720. The printer will run too fast for decent dot control. Then if you slow it down by going to uni directional or choosing a slower head speed, you're back at 720x720 productivity or slower. Let me suggest 720x720, 8 pass, fast head speed. You'll end up with better...
  2. JV3 w/ JVS inks making profile with flexi & profile maker

If it is the restrictions, they should be done based on Chroma, not lightness. Well, except the black of course. K you do based on lightness. But both the C and M should be done via Chroma. Use the Y as a grey balance variable judged by eye. IOW, set the C and M based on real measurements in...
  3. JV3 w/ JVS inks making profile with flexi & profile maker

This would be about right when you want the to have the perception of higher resolution prints at the expense of a bit more ink use. This would be well suited to banner printing or when you can tolerate a more obvious black dot. This uses less ink, but prints appears grainier. It is all a...
  4. Color Match Car Color

Best advice = don't even try to match the paint color. Instead design something that doesn't depend on the paint match.
  5. Color Match Car Color

agreed that printing variations is better than relying on the pantone 100%. Some car paints just can't be matched due to saturation or metalic looks. Sometimes setting customer expectation lower is far easier that trying to get an exact match.
  6. Color Match Car Color

I find it easy to hold up a pantone swatch book to the paint then i always have that as a reference during production.
  7. Ultravu 260 - Colorburst 8.2 Lin File

Let me make as wild ass guess...Is it a gloss canvas? If so, the light bouncing off the texture of the canvas surface may make it unreadable. The solution is a polarizing filter. Unfortunatly they are only available on the old Spectrolino/Spectroscan instruments, (AFAIK) not the i1. The simple...
  8. Gray... ugh....

What is the color mix in the file for black? If you've made the output profile you should be getting color pretty close to what is in the file.
  9. Gray... ugh....

Hi Gene! I have a feeling you're doing better than you suggest. I haven't been on the forums since PrintingDigital.net shut down. Thought i might get back in the information loop. God knows i can use help with my printer repair and maintenance at times. Bigdawg - sorry to hear about your...
  10. One for you color theory guys?

Perceptual, Spot, and Relative Colorimetric should all give you neutral greys. Relative and Perceptual will give differing lightness values, but both should output neutral through a properly functioning profile. EPS, PDF, TIFF, or JPEG should all output the same color if you've got your...
  11. Gray... ugh....

Great info you're sharing on color! But doesn't using less GCR balance in more CMY relative to K? GCR is after all Grey Component Replacement, so cranking up the GRC balances more K relative to CMY make the neutral colors more stable under different lighting and fading conditions.
  12. One for you color theory guys?

You have 3 choices... 1. leave your color management settings as they are and edit out the grey through trial and error 2. turn off the color conversion in your RIP, make sure the source file you're working with is CMYK format, then spec the greys in the file to be K only values 3. make your own...
  13. illustrator problem NOT FOR NEWBIES

Reread Rob's posts. He's 100% on target. Just a minor detail to add that likely doesn't matter is that ai converts all pantones in gradients to the native file format of rgb or cmyk. So might as well rasterize and be sure.
  14. JV3-160S and Flexi 7.6PRO Color Management

I'm too rusty with flexi to step you through the process without the rip in front of me, but i can give you some general pointers. To calibrate and profile your monitor is worthwhile but doesn't improve your prints directly. What you'll need is something like the EyeOne Proof system to work...
  15. software question onyx/roland

I'll ask around. Worse case I know a great guy here in San Diego (not me).
  16. software question onyx/roland

Ah - Darren. Great photographer. He's moved to the seattle area and has changed industries (i think).
  17. software question onyx/roland

I ask because I'm the full time west coast GIA trainer. At least until today. Today is the day i switch to being a contractor with GIA and spend more time in my new shop. I can't tell you how excited I am. Things are looking good. So, to get my geek fix, I'll be spending more time on this board...
  18. software question onyx/roland

Who was your instructor? Which location did you attend? San Diego or Akron?
  19. software question onyx/roland

Option 1 Turn off color management by setting the input profiles in teh Quickset to NONE. Then you have to be the one that edits all the files to print with the right color. Pro = no $ out of pocket, Con = lots of lost $ due to poor color and time spent screwing around to get it "right". Option...
  20. And here comes HP

These are great printers. I'm currently training HP's international sales and marketing people and the printers are very strong. Because the printheads are staggered, the ink goes down in almost exactly the same order in bidirectional. This allows full speed printing and be far less likely to...
