I do have CS3, but I agree on lesser versioned machines it would be great to have a utility that will take a CS3 file and "save-as" to a lesser version. now that would be a real useful tool.
I prefer CS3 and the live trace is much better. Although I do occasionally drop to Xara to do the bitmap tracer in there, its occasionally better for me!!!
and is the software pointing to the appropriate com port in the software.
And have you tried to cut something from directly in the signgo software.

Ok so how is it connected to the computer, is it via a Com port or a parallel port (lpt1) com ports are "generally" small and are 9pin, Does it have a USB option? So if its USB to Serial that opens up a new can of worms. If you give us more info we will be able to help more.
Try the Roland PNC 1000 or the 1000a driver, if it doesnt have its own driver, infact you may also try the refine drivers in there as well.
Does the machine cut a sample test cut, (a square within a square) this should be a simple button push button from the display on the cutter. the next...
it sounds like the nodes are open and need closing. As sign_boy said do you have Illustrator, Simply draw from one node to the other to close it. I have Flexi but I do all my design in Illy.
